Etruscans
and Romans
SAN GIULIANO (Barbarano Romano) The ancient Etruscan necropolis of San Giuliano is situated near Barbarano, an old town of medieval origin, about 10 miles from Viterbo. This cliff-type necropolis has several rock-cut tombs dating from between the 7th and the 2nd centuries BC. The site took its name from the little medieval church of San Giuliano, situated on the top of a tuffaceous hill once occupied by the Etruscan town. The area of San Giuliano is of great archaeological relevance for the many tombs discovered and the great abundance of objects found inside the graves (buccheri, Corinthian vases and bronze artefacts). Some of the finds are kept in a little museum housed in a municipal building in the centre of Barbarano. The most interesting tombs are the Tomba Cima, the Tomba del Cervo, the Tomba Rosi, the Tomba della Regina and the so-called “Palazzine”.
