Etruscans
and Romans
Situated
just a few miles from Viterbo, Castel’Asso is an interesting Etruscan
cliff-type necropolis with tombs dating from between the 4th and the
2nd centuries BC. Built in the late Hellenic period, the town was
probably under the control of Tarquinia, whose territory extended as far as Lake Bolsena.
Castel d’Asso’s dado-type tombs are hewn out of tuff rock and, in same cases,
the names of the owners of the tombs are still visible on their façade (Tomba
di Arnth Ceises and Tomba dei Tetnies). Some tombs could hold up to seventy
people, like the Tomba Orioli. Some other tombs are rich and imposing, like the
Tomba Grande, a huge dado-type tomb with a big rock-cut porch. The tomb
contained several sarcophagi, some of which are still inside the funerary
chamber.You can also cross the
little bridge over the river Freddano and go up a little hill to see the remains
of an old medieval castle of the twelfth century.
